Universal Installation Tools: Your Wallpapering Toolkit!
Before we dive into the specifics, gather these essentials. You'll need most of these regardless of your wallpaper type:
- Your Chosen Wallpaper Rolls (of course!)
- Measuring Tape: For precise cuts.
- Utility Knife & Snap-Off Blades: A sharp blade is non-negotiable for clean cuts! Always snap off a fresh blade segment frequently.
- Smoothing Tool / Squeegee: A soft-edged plastic tool to press out air bubbles and smooth the paper.
- Level or Plumb Bob: Crucial for drawing that perfectly straight first line.
- Pencil: For marking your plumb line and cuts.
- Damp Sponge / Clean Cloths: For wiping away excess paste or adhesive residue.
- Stepladder: To reach those high spots safely.
- Drop Cloth: To protect your floors.
- Clean Bucket & Water: For prepasted activation or cleaning.
- E-Z Hang (Optional but highly recommended!): For Peel and Stick and Prepasted wallpaper – remember, it gives you that fantastic "slip" for easy positioning!
- Wallpaper Paste & Paste Brush/Roller (for Traditional Non-Woven only): Make sure it's the right kind for non-woven paper.
Important Universal Tips Before You Hang!
No matter which wallpaper you chose, these general tips will make your life much easier:
- Read Your Wallpaper's Instructions: Seriously, every roll is a little different! Always check the manufacturer's specific hanging instructions that come with your paper.
- Acclimate Your Wallpaper: Let your wallpaper rolls sit in the room where they'll be installed for at least 24-48 hours before hanging. This allows the paper to adjust to your room's temperature and humidity, minimizing expansion or contraction after installation.
- Draw Your First Plumb Line: This is critical for a straight start! Measure out from your starting corner (usually a less noticeable one) a distance slightly less than the width of your wallpaper roll (e.g., if your roll is 20.5 inches wide, measure 19.5-20 inches). Use your level or plumb bob to draw a perfectly straight, vertical line down the wall. This is your guide for the very first strip.
- Cut Your Strips with Extra: Measure your wall's height and add about 4-6 inches (2-3 inches for top, 2-3 inches for bottom) to each strip for trimming. If you have a pattern repeat, make sure to account for it when cutting subsequent strips!
- Patience is Your Best Tool: Don't rush! Take your time with each strip. Small adjustments early on prevent big headaches later.
- Work Top-Down, Center-Out: Most wallpaper is applied from the top of the wall downwards, smoothing from the center outwards to push out air bubbles.
1. How to Install Polyester Peel and Stick Wallpaper (Thick, Canvas-Textured)
This is the ultimate DIY dream for quick, clean transformations! Our Polyester Peel and Stick is extra special because it's thick and has a beautiful canvas-like texture, adding gorgeous depth to your walls.
Quick Prep Reminder: Your walls should be smooth, clean, and non-porous. This wallpaper will show any wall texture, so skim-coating is necessary if your walls aren't smooth.
Optional Helper: E-Z Hang is Your Secret Weapon! For extra confidence and adjustability, lightly mist your prepped wall with Roman's E-Z Hang before applying the wallpaper. This creates a temporary "slip" that allows you to easily slide and reposition the paper for perfect alignment, especially if you're matching a pattern.
Step-by-Step:
- Cut Your First Strip: Measure your wall's height. Add 4-6 inches for trimming. Cut your first strip.
- Align & Peel the Top: Starting from your plumb line, peel back just the top 4-6 inches of the backing paper. Align the exposed top edge of the wallpaper with your plumb line and the top of your wall (leaving 2-3 inches extra at the ceiling for trimming).
- Stick & Smooth Down: Gently press the exposed adhesive portion to the wall. Using your smoothing tool, start from the center of the strip and work outwards, smoothing down. As you go, slowly peel more of the backing paper downwards with one hand while smoothing the wallpaper onto the wall with the other. Overlap multi-strip wallpaper by about 1/2" unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer.
- Work Out Bubbles: If you see any air bubbles, gently lift the wallpaper back to that point and re-smooth, pushing the air outwards. Thanks to E-Z Hang, repositioning is a breeze!
- Trim Excess: Once the entire strip is smoothed down, use your sharp utility knife and a straight edge (like your smoothing tool) to carefully trim the excess at the top (ceiling line) and bottom (baseboard).
-
Repeat for Next Strips:
- Measure & Cut: For your next strip, align it to your previous one on the roll to ensure the pattern matches. Cut, again adding extra length.
- Align & Match: Place the new strip right next to the previous one, carefully aligning the pattern. Our peel and stick is typically butt-jointed (meaning the edges meet perfectly without overlapping unless specified). If you used E-Z Hang, you'll love the ability to slide it for a flawless match!
- Smooth & Trim: Repeat steps 3-5.
- Outlet/Switch Cutouts: Turn off power at the breaker first! Loosely apply the paper over the outlet/switch. Gently feel for the edges of the box and make a small X-cut from the center outwards to the corners of the box. Carefully trim around the box, leaving about 1/2 inch to tuck behind the plate. Replace cover once dry.
- Final Smooth & Clean: Give all your seams and edges a final smooth with your tool. Lightly wipe down the wallpaper with a clean, damp cloth to remove any potential adhesive residue or marks.
2. How to Install Prepasted Wallpaper (Thick, Smooth)
Our Prepasted wallpaper is thick and smooth, offering a fantastic balance of quality and convenience. The adhesive is already on the back, just waiting for water!
Quick Prep Reminder: Your walls should be properly primed/sized before installing prepasted wallpaper. This ensures proper adhesion and, more importantly, easy removal when you're ready for a change!
Activation Options:
- Water Tray Method: Fill a wallpaper water tray (or a clean, large bucket) with cool water.
- Spray Bottle Method (Often easier!): Lightly mist the entire back of the wallpaper strip with water using a spray bottle until all the adhesive is damp.
- E-Z Hang Method (Highly Recommended!): For even better slip and positioning, use E-Z Hang in a spray bottle! Lightly mist the back of the paper with E-Z Hang until the paste is damp.
Step-by-Step:
- Cut Your First Strip: Measure your wall's height and add 4-6 inches for trimming. Cut your first strip.
-
Activate & "Book" the Paper:
- Tray: Roll the cut strip from bottom to top, adhesive side out. Pull it through the water tray slowly, ensuring the entire back gets wet.
- Spray: Lay the strip adhesive-side up on a clean drop cloth. Generously mist the entire back with water or E-Z Hang until all the paste is damp.
- Book It: Gently fold both ends of the strip inward towards the center, adhesive to adhesive (don't crease!). This protects the paste and allows it to activate evenly. Let it "rest" for the time recommended by your wallpaper manufacturer (usually 5-10 minutes).
- Align to Wall: Take your booked strip to the wall. Align the top edge of the strip with your plumb line and the ceiling (leaving excess for trimming). Unfold the top half of the paper.
- Apply & Smooth: Gently press the top half to the wall. Using your smoothing tool, start from the center and work outwards, smoothing the paper down and pushing out any air bubbles. Then, unfold the bottom half and continue smoothing down.
- Work Out Bubbles: If bubbles appear, gently lift the paper back to that point and re-smooth, pushing air outwards. The activated paste will give you good slip for repositioning.
- Trim Excess: Once smoothed, use your sharp utility knife and a straight edge to carefully trim the excess at the top and bottom.
-
Repeat for Next Strips:
- Measure & Cut: For your next strip, align it to your previous one on the roll to ensure the pattern matches. Cut, adding extra length.
- Activate, Book & Align: Repeat steps 2 and 3. Most modern prepasted wallpapers are butt-jointed (edges meet precisely without overlapping).
- Smooth & Trim: Repeat steps 4-6.
- Outlet/Switch Cutouts: Turn off power at the breaker! Loosely apply paper. Feel for the box edges, make a small X-cut, and trim around the box, leaving 1/2 inch to tuck. Replace cover once dry.
- Clean Excess Paste: Immediately and gently wipe away any visible excess paste from the wallpaper surface and seams with a clean, damp sponge. Don't rub too hard!
3. How to Install Traditional Non-Woven Wallpaper (Thick, Smooth)
Our Traditional Non-Woven Wallpaper is thick and smooth, offering superb durability and a luxurious feel. The key difference here is that you apply the paste directly to the wall – a method often called "paste-the-wall," which many find very clean and manageable!
Quick Prep Reminder: Your walls must be thoroughly sized/primed with a good wallpaper primer (sizing) before applying traditional non-woven wallpaper. This is absolutely critical for proper adhesion and effortless future removal.
Step-by-Step:
- Cut Your First Strip: Measure your wall's height and add 4-6 inches for trimming. Cut your first strip.
- Apply Paste to the Wall: Using a paste roller or brush, apply an even layer of recommended non-woven wallpaper paste to the wall surface for about the width of one wallpaper strip, plus a few inches extra, starting from your plumb line. Don't apply too much or too little – follow paste manufacturer instructions!
- Hang the First Strip: Carefully bring your dry wallpaper strip to the pasted wall. Align the top edge of the strip with your plumb line and the ceiling (leaving excess for trimming).
- Smooth Out: Gently press the wallpaper to the wall. Using your smoothing tool, start from the center of the strip and work outwards, pushing out any air bubbles. Work your way down the strip.
- Trim Excess: Once the entire strip is smoothed down, use your sharp utility knife and a straight edge (like your smoothing tool) to carefully trim the excess at the top and bottom.
-
Repeat for Next Strips:
- Measure & Cut: For your next strip, align it to your previous one on the roll to ensure the pattern matches. Cut, again adding extra length.
- Apply Paste & Align: Apply paste to the next section of the wall. Bring your new, dry wallpaper strip to the wall and align it precisely next to the previous strip. Most modern non-woven wallpapers are butt-jointed (edges meet precisely without overlapping).
- Smooth & Trim: Repeat steps 4-5.
- Outlet/Switch Cutouts: Turn off power at the breaker! Apply wallpaper over the outlet/switch.
Don't rub too hard, as some papers can be sensitive when wet.
